Persevering to Achieve a Goal

In Brown Girl Dreaming , Jacqueline Woodson shows how one can persevere to achieve a goal. She knew from a very young age that she loved writing and wanted to make a career out of that passion.  Join us tonight at 6:30 for a virtual book club event to talk about how we can set our own goals and break own the steps to achieve our goals. Check your email for the link to join us this evening.  You can also check out this blog post from Big Life Journal that helps kids set and reach their goals!

Theme Bubble Chart

It was great to have families join us yesterday evening for our first virtual meet-up for Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.  For last night's event, we created theme bubble charts that help us visualize examples from the book and our own connections that tie to a theme of our choice. Remember we can make many different connections! Like text to self, text to text, and text to world.  We also highlighted the themes of family, identity, and community. Check out the theme bubble chart examples below and look for updates to Miss Kristy's chart as we read Brown Girl Dreaming ! Feel free to comment on this post with your own ideas for your theme bubble chart!

Create your own "Friends & Family Tree"

Welcome to our Family Book Club! We're all excited to read Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.  At the beginning of  Brown Girl Dreaming , Jaqueline Woodson introduces herself and the book through a family tree. Throughout the text ,  relationships and family are important. In  order to understand ourselves better we look at our family history. Where do we come from? Who makes up our family?    As we read Brown Girl Dreaming , we'll be working on the literacy skill of making connections. When we can make connections to the stories we read, we become more engaged and better understand stories.   Now it’s our turn to make our own Friends and Family Tree. It does not have to be as large as Jaqueline Woodson’s, just go as far back as you know. Families can be made up of our biological family members and the people in our lives who have become our family. Families can work together to create your very own Friends and Family Tree! Use Jaqueline’s tree...
